DUO-ART Music Rolls:

This list of acclaimed ARTCRAFT Music Rolls should interest any owner of the versatile Duo-Art 'reproducing' player. While utilizing only 80 of the 88 keys of the piano scale (since the margins contain 'expression commands' which activate the ingenious 'dynamic' mechanism) ... all Duo-Art rolls can be played on standard pedal-players and competing brands of 'reproducing' pianos. It's as simple as taping over the top/bottom 4 holes on the tracker bar scale, using the 3-M 'Magic Plus' removable tape. The ARTCRAFT Studio regularly performs Welte-Mignon (Licensee), 'Recordo', Ampico and other 'reproducing' rolls on the 2 Steinway player grands: a Duo-Art "AR" electric instrument ... and a pedal "O" standard Pianola. Since the 'note score' is the most important part of any music roll, the dedicated enthusiast should "bypass" the expression and enjoy the music - if there is no ARTCRAFT edition for a particular brand of piano. [Note: if you get told by an expert? that your 'reproducing' player uses only the rolls made for it, you've received some improper advice! Most old commercial 'reproducing' rolls were retrofitted from standard 88-Note arrangements which were already on the market!]

If you have a Duo-Art Pianola in your household, here's an array of titles that will really "show off" your instrument, using the full dynamic range (when needed) and featuring pedal shadings which transcend the old factory-formula methods. Most of these rolls have been performed for audiences in the concert hall, so will more than meet your requirements for an artistic performance.

88-Note Music Rolls:

These ARTCRAFT Rolls play on standard - or electrified - pedal-player instruments. Most of these ARTCRAFT 'full-scale' arrangements use some of the bottom four keys on the piano keyboard ... but for instruments with an eighty-note playing scale, the octaves are 'duplexed' to fit into the narrower range. The Word/Dialogue rolls feature a printed text which gives the Pianolist suggestions for the musical interpretation, i.e. a 'running commentary'.

All ARTCRAFT 88-Note Rolls play superbly on 'reproducing' (expression) players, such as the Duo-Art, Ampico or Welte-Mignon (Licensee), etc. - even if the hand controls aren't being used. This is due to the Interpretive Arranging which builds-in a "striking effect" for each individual note, and which gives the listener the illusion of accenting. (Naturally, the performance will improve with the Pianolist's involvement with the music roll, via the manual controls.) If you possess a 'reproducing' player and find one of the 88-Note Rolls which appeals to you, go ahead and order it! The PERFORATION LENGTH - honed down to a 128th of a note - is more important to music roll performance than any added-on expression score. (Commercial 88-Note rolls, by comparison, usually don't satisfy 'reproducing' piano owners because of the homogeneous perforations and excessive automatic sustaining pedal scores.) The following rolls have all been "audience-tested" on the concert stage and for intimate groups of musicians. Each title could be the highlight of your home musicale.

Ampico Music Rolls:

Admittedly, the offerings by ARTCRAFT Music Rolls - at this time - are few, but there was a reason for this situation — beyond the fact that the Studio needed an Ampico expression player for roll-editing purposes. (At this writing, we have acquired our 3rd Ampico in 4½ decades. The fine instrument is being restored in Maine right now, and should be installed in our Studio by early Summer '99!) ARTCRAFT concentrated on 88-Note and Duo-Art "reproducing" rolls for the past 17 years, because these are international standards — there are pneumatic players which use 88-Note or Duo-Art rolls in all countries, whereas the Ampico was geographically 'locked' into the United States. ARTCRAFT has, since its beginning, been supplying quality Interpretive Arrangements to foreign customers as well as filling the needs of domestic Pianola enthusiasts.

The second reason why ARTCRAFT was slow to begin regular Ampico releases was two-fold. The Ampico performance success rests largely ON THE CHARACTER OF THE "STRIKING" NOTESi.e. the perforation lengths — rather than the lock-and-cancel intensity systems. Thus, the 88-Note ARTCRAFT Interpretive Arrangements were a perfect match for the Ampico player; the sparkling keyboard "attack" combined with pedal shading effects unique to this perforating method provide an 'agogic' accenting effect. Even when playing without the benefit of the expression perforations, standard ARTCRAFT 88-Note Rolls generally out-performed the 'dreamy' clusters of sostenuto chords which give original Ampico rolls that "they-all-sound-the-same" nature when played in a series. The other half of the "Ampico drought" rests with the owners of the instruments themselves. The Ampico was marketed to the 'dinner music' and 'dancing-in-the-parlour' crowd in the 'Twenties and the hotel lobby market in the early 'Thirties, both encouraging one to walk away and let the piano rattle-on without the benefit of personal involvement ("monitoring"). The dedicated Ampico owner — who LISTENS TO THE ROLLS — has long ago discovered that "variety is the spice of life" ... and plays any type of roll on his prized instrument. This brings us back to full circle, since the variable-length perforations of ARTCRAFT Rolls add "verve" and "spice" to any player, including the Ampico, and this has little to do with the automatic expression system. To paraphrase Shakespeare, "The note arrangement's the thing!"

We urge you to try ARTCRAFT 88-Note Rolls on your Ampico ... and also experiment with a variety of music roll brands. There's a whole world out there, beyond the arrangingformulae of the Three M's: Milton (Susskind, a.k.a. Fairchild), J. Milton (Delcamp) and Frank C. Milne, the three musicians responsible for most of the original library which is "tired" — in the opinion of those used to Interpretive Arranging performance standards.

Meanwhile, ARTCRAFT acquired a 1926 Ampico, for the purpose of creating effervescent and exciting NEW expression roll arrangements. We definitely plan on expanding our Ampico repertoire. See this Internet page for details on the instrument, being rebuilt at this time: Ampico 'Update' department.

CLEOPATRA RAG Four Hand arrangement based on an RCA-Victor LP by Hersh & Montgomery -Joseph Lamb-

This spectacular Interpretive Arrangement was created for the '88 AMICA player club convention in San Francisco, CA and at the time of its release a side-by-side Cassette was issued, to show how the striking/accenting closely simulated the duo-pianists. You must order this roll from the following address — and supplies are limited:Dale Lawrence, Automatic Music Foundation, 837 Coventry Rd., Kensington, Calif. 94707. [Ampico Rolls are $17.00 + 2.00 shipping; 88-Note Rolls, which use the FULL piano scale(!), are $15.00 + 2.00 shipping within the USA.] CLEOPATRA RAG will give you a taste of what's-to-come for virtuoso playing on an Ampico "reproducing" piano. This expression roll will 'sweep away' those wistful and lulling original Ampico rolls, many of which were just "musical wallpaper" — and not SOLOIST performances!
